Fast Optical Shutter (FOS)
There are three (3) different types of standard liquid
crystal shutters available from stock offering a range of different
performance characteristics. The standard models are (i) FOS-TN, (ii) FOS-DTN, and (iii) FOS-ECS-PA. Furthermore, these models are
available in a number of different standard sizes. Custom sizes up to
maximum 14x16 inches are also available upon request. The technical
characteristics of the different liquid crystal shutters are summarised in
the following tables:

Application
notes:
1. Normal transmission measured
with a distance of 40cm between light source &
detector
3. Switching speed when
applying a voltage-pulse at temperature 25oC
4. Switching speed upon removal
of the driving voltage at temperature
25oC
5. Activation switching speed is a function of
voltage; high voltage increases activation switching
speed
6. Switching speed is a function of
temperature; higher temperature increases switching
speed
7. Variation of transmittance (contrast) when
shutter is viewed at incident angles
10. Optical-state of shutter when in the
inactivated state (no voltage applied)
11. Grey-scale obtained via time-width
modulation (rapid switching between optical states)
The different types of liquid crystal shutters available are summarised
below:
TWISTED-NEMATIC
SHUTTER: Twisted-nematic (TN) liquid crystal
shutter. FOS-TN shutter offers medium switching speeds, high contrast
and medium light-state transmittance. Please click on FOS-TN shutter for further information.
DOUBLE-CELL TWISTED-NEMATIC
SHUTTER: Double-cell Twisted Nematic (DTN) liquid
crystal shutter. FOS-DTN shutter offers ultra-short pulses of
OPEN state (exposure-times) down to 50 microseconds. Please click on
FOS-DTN shutter for further information.
ECS-PA SHUTTER:
Electrically Commanded Surface (ECS) liquid crystal shutter.
FOS-ECS-PA shutter offers fast switching speeds, high contrast and
medium light-state transmittance. Please click on FOS-ECS-PA shutter for further information.
Other types of shutters available (eg. Guest-Host,
liquid-crystal-colour-filter, phase retarder, variable reflective mirror,
etc). Please contact LC-TEC DISPLAYS AB for further information.
Custom sizes from 5 x 5 mm up to maximum 14 x 16 inches
available.
Please note shutters are delivered without controlling
electronics and that suitable driving electronics are usually
developed by the customer and incorporated together with the electronics
for the complete system as a whole since this generally provides for the
most cost effective & ergonomic product solution.
